Prof. Nobuo Takeda
Workshop Chairperson
Background
In 1997, the first International Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) took place at Stanford University. Since then, a workshop has taken place every two years, organized by the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics of the Stanford University and chaired by Prof. Fu-Kuo Chang. Considering the increasing activity of the field, a decision was made to establish a similar workshop in Europe to be held every two years in alternation with the Stanford Workshop. The first European Workshop was held in 2002.

The first Australasian SHM workshop was held in 2002. While, the first International Workshop on Advanced Sensors, Structural Health Monitoring, and Smart Structures was held in Japan in 2003. During the second Australian workshop in 2004, it was apparent that there is a drastic increase in the number of researchers in this field in Asia-Pacific region. This led to the extension of the Australasian and Japanese SHM workshops to the Asia-Pacific Region. Due to the fast growth of economies in this region, the interests of the research weigh in somewhat different areas from Stanford’s and Euro-pean’s. Thus, a decision was made to encourage re-searchers to exchange the up-to-date activities and cultivate joint research efforts. This workshop takes place in the same year as the European workshop but in December.

The first Asia-Pacific Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring (APWSHM) was held at Yokohama, Japan in 2006, organized by Professor. A. Mita, Keio University, while the second one was held at Melbourne, Australia in 2008, organized by Professor W. K. Chiu, Monash University. This workshop is the third one to be held in Tokyo, Japan.
